Why AgensGraph: PostgreSQL Compatibility

For the recent few years, a lot of developers, data analysts, and operators working with PostgreSQL were hungry for change.

Known as one of the best open-source relational databases, PostgreSQL has grown up enough to compete with the industry-leading commercial enterprise databases in various fields, with respect to its outstanding reliability and performance.

But thanks to an IT revolution called ‘Big Data’, our real world started to reveal its full and diverse nature carrying its massive volume of information and outrageous complexity.

As both the size and the complexity of data rapidly increases, even the most fascinating relational database produced only disappointment when it comes to joining multiple tables, especially in dealing with highly interconnected data.

AgensGraph is a graph database management system built upon PostgreSQL. It offers graph data structure which is optimized for storing, processing, querying and analyzing highly connected data.

It does not require a large number of join operations as traditional relational databases did. You now can say goodbye to tons of join operations that might torture you, a pit hole that drag down your processes.

Almost every feature of PostgreSQL is included with various extensions support, making your legacy environment on PostgreSQL has little thing to change to go with graph data environment.

It is clear that many corporations who had only relied on relational database are moving into graph database environments like AgensGraph, because of their lower cost in multiple join operations when dealing with highly connected data and powerful visualization that more closely reflects the real world.

One of their concerns is that whether it really provides the same level of reliability and functionality as existing RDBMS(Relational Database Management System) offers.

Most ‘enterprise-class’ RDBMS provides backup, HA and monitoring tools which are designed for a trustable data management, and a rich pool of internal functions and efficient user-defined functions. Multiple language drivers for various development environments are also included in this DBMS package.

AgensGraph is a multi-model DBMS which is an integration of graph database and PostgreSQL, one of the world-class RDBMSs for enterprises. AgensGraph is not an extension of PostgreSQL, an independent solution that combines a graph database and a relational database (PostgreSQL) with the manageability for enterprise data environment.

Taking advantage of graph data without PostgreSQL environment is not an easy task; many have been long bounded to the existing toolset, dependencies and extensions of PostgreSQL, and leaving these only to process and analyze graph data is not a favorable journey for most developers and engineers nor analysts and operators.

AgensGraph offers a full set of features of PostgreSQL like backup & HA (Stolon), logging, monitoring, optimization and many extensions required for an enterprise database and its users.

The same data environment and full support of PostgreSQL tools eliminate your cost that might have occurred during the conversion to data platforms other than AgensGraph, and brings a seamless integration of graph and relational data management.
