How to analyze movies in a minute with Graph DB deployed cloud service

Even though graph databases are now applied worldwide in different ways, we expect there are people out there still clueless about what a graph database is, or how it can help their data meet the needs of their companies or self-interests. It is not easy to notice a relationship between data or figure out the meaning behind the data just by looking at the rows and columns.

Tom Hanks starred in a film called ‘Cloud Atlas’, directed by the Wachowskis, who were also the directors of ‘The Matrix’, in which Keanu Reeves starred in. Therefore, the Wachowskis are the links between the two actors.
The above table is just an example to show what the AG Cloud Express can offer, instead of having to go through a thought process in your mind. For data that can be determined by human intelligence, graph visualization software may not be necessary. However, when the data is accumulated beyond comprehensive understanding (such as chemical compounds or manufacturing components, etc), it is difficult or near impossible to pinpoint the relationship of data.

Take a few seconds to make an account
First, you must create an account to get access to AG Cloud Express.
A) Sign in with a Google account for faster access.
B) If you do not have a Google account, click the ‘Sign Up’ button and fill in the required information.
Once you click ‘Sign Up’, enter your name, email address, and create a password. An account will be created immediately. Fill in the newly created account in the blank fields above.
Starting Project (Dataset)
The following screen will appear when you sign in.
C) Click ‘Add a New Project’ to load the built-in dataset.
D) Select ‘Graph for Movies Data’.
E) Click ‘Create New Project’ button to load the dataset.
When you start your project, you will be presented with a tutorial on movie data. Get familiar with the Cypher query language and an introduction to AG Cloud features through this tutorial. Several queries are introduced to find relationships in movie data.
Understanding and familiarizing yourself with the tutorial will help you query data relationships and create graphs the next time you import your own CSV data to AG Cloud Express. The said feature is currently not available, but it will be updated soon as it is being tested internally at the moment.
F) Copy any query that interests you (the image shows a query of ‘Who has acted with Tom Hanks’) and click ‘Launch AG Viewer’. AG Viewer will be opened in a new tab.
G) In a blank Query Editor, paste the copied query from the previous step and press the triangular ‘Run Query’ button on the right to show the relationship. In this case, the AG Viewer will show the ‘actors who have worked with Tom Hanks’ as shown below.
The graph above includes the films in which Tom Hanks appeared, as well as the leading and supporting actors and actresses who starred with Tom Hanks in each film. As you can see, the leading/supporting actors and actresses have also appeared in other films.
How to see data without typing in Cypher
When you select the dataset (as shown in step D), the dataset is built into the AG Viewer. The following guide shows how to get around AG Viewer without having to type in the Cypher query. Either start a new AG Viewer or close the previous session to make a new one.
H) The node labels include nodes of movies and people. The edge labels show action, such as ‘acted in’, ‘directed’, etc. Properties show the characteristics of each node, and you can check the birth year, name, and year of the movie release. Click the nodes, edges, and properties to find what sort of connections exist between the movie, actors, and directors.
The two markers in the red box on the right are the Expand and the Refresh button. If you want to expand the workspace so that you can freely move around the nodes, click the expand button. Click the refresh button to return the cluttered nodes to their initial state.
As shown in the image above, the nodes for the movies are spread out. If you want to see the involved people of a specific movie, right-click on that node, and the following node features will appear.
1) Return the node to its original position
2) Show other nodes related to the node (movie -> people, people -> movie)
3) Hide the node (click refresh to make it reappear)
4) Turn off the node feature window
Click and drag around with different nodes and edges to see how it interacts with other nodes!
Certain nodes may not contain associated data. Please note that the dataset contained in the AG Cloud Express is a demo version and is not a bug in the program.
The purpose and roadmap of AG Cloud Express
AG Cloud Express is aimed at helping more people understand the ‘graph’ of graph databases, but its main purpose is to help DB engineers, developers, and data analytic managers grow insights via graphs as quickly and simply as possible. Many companies store data in a table to this day, only to leave it behind for unpromised future needs. AG Cloud Express can help build a cloud-based application with its user-friendly, easy-to-use, cost-effective graph database service.
